How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

A man, 80s, frail, about 1.71 m tall. Sly smile expression. Wearing: cardigan, shirt and tie, corduroys, slippers, glasses (plain fabrics, no logos, brand names or readable text). Palette: Maroon, beige, brown. Prop: folding chessboard, carried naturally and bound to the hand or arm bone that holds it. Clay style. The rig test is judged by eye from dist/rig-test.png: in the bent pose every limb, sleeve and the prop must stay attached and deform with the body — verify the capture visually before reporting PASS.

Note: 27,856 triangles, 10 materials, 2 embedded procedural normal maps (clay thumbprint, corduroy wale). 25 mixamorig bones (GLTFLoader shows them as mixamorigHips etc.); each bone's local +Y points at its child. Bind pose is a T-pose; the file has no animation clips. Mitten-style hands with sculpted fingers and no finger bones, so finger channels in a retargeted clip are ignored. Ten SkinnedMeshes share one set of bone nodes; the glTF stores one skin entry per mesh, all with the same 25 joints. The folding chessboard is a separate mesh weighted 100% to mixamorig:RightHand and gripped by its hinge edge. In the T-pose it sticks out flat past the fingertips; with the arm lowered it hangs at the side like a case. When a thigh swings forward, the cardigan's front hem lifts with it. glb-lint reported 0 errors. Its verdict reads 'unverified' only because no requirements contract was supplied. Its warnings: 10 materials against the soft-clay default of 5 (one material per library role), the soft-clay 0.2 m reference height, and overlapping or detached sibling boxes, which are expected for layered clothing, glasses and a hand-held prop. Each eyelid is an open shell, which is visible only from inside the head. In the plan, the meshes are grouped under four nodes: chessplayer.figure, .outfit, .glasses and .chessboard.

About the Retired Chess Player 3D model

Retired Chess Player is a free clay 3D model from the City and office characters set, rigged with a 25-bone Mixamo-compatible skeleton. It measures 1.9 m × 1.7 m × 40 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 27,856 triangles across 10 meshes, with 11 named parts. Download the 1.8 MB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Retired Chess Player 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 1.8 MB: 27,856 triangles, 18,104 vertices and 10 materials, modelled in metres at 1.9 m × 1.7 m × 40 cm.
Is Retired Chess Player animated?
It ships without a baked clip, in its bind pose. It is rigged with a 25-bone Mixamo-compatible skeleton, so it takes retargeted animation.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Retired Chess Player 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
