Open pit terraces

A low-poly open-pit quarry cut into a block of ground: four stepped benches run from ochre topsoil down into slate rock, and a haul road spirals down to a pit floor where an excavator works an ore seam. Two haul trucks climb the ramp and a light tower stands on the rim.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Open pit terraces for the Mine and Quarry kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Mine and Quarry kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Rock, dust and heavy machines. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: ochre #bd8728, slate #525e6f, machine yellow #eecd2b, rust #9b4427, ochre dark #7e5a1b, slate dark #323943, ochre light #d6a95c, slate light #7b8593, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `oreColour` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Ore colour" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 155.1 m wide (x) by 139.9 m deep (z) at the foot of the block. The rim is at 35 m and the light-tower lamps reach 45.48 m. There are four 8 m benches with 7.5 m berms and faces battered at about 70°, down to a pit floor about 47 m across (x) and 3 m above the block's base. The haul trucks are about 9 m long, which is mid-size quarry-truck scale. The road entrance faces +Z, and the origin is at the bottom centre, resting on y = 0. The exported model has 2,736 triangles in 33 meshes (merged per part and colour), with no animation clip and flat normals baked in (non-indexed). Every material is named exactly after its kit palette colour, and all 12 kit colours are used. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so the same colour name appears on several materials: recolour by name. oreColour works in steps and colours the ore seam, the stockpiles and the truck loads: below 0.2 slate light, 0.2–0.4 ochre light, 0.4–0.6 rust (the default and the GLB), 0.6–0.8 ochre, and 0.8 and up machine yellow. benchCount, benchHeight and bermWidth rebuild the pit and its spiral ramps. haulTrucks places 0–3 trucks, one per upper ramp. Params change geometry only when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer; the GLB is baked at the defaults. The combined extreme (5 benches, 10 m high, 6 m berms, 3 trucks, ore 1) was captured and passed three-check. glb-lint: 0 errors and 6 heuristic warnings: duplicate materials (per-mesh materials), unindexed geometry (flat shading on purpose), sibling overlap (faces, berms and strata bands share the block on purpose), detached parts (bench and floor meshes sit inside the block, not on the ground plane), scale (compared with the direction's 1 m reference), plus its standing 'no requirements contract' UNVERIFIED verdict. three-check passes 24 of 24 checks; its triangle figure includes the viewer's staging ground, which is not exported. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens that this library's slug-based ids need; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. The viewer renders at exposure 0.62 on a darker ground disc; neither is part of the GLB.

About the Open pit terraces 3D model

Open pit terraces is a free low-poly 3D model from the Mine and Quarry set. It measures 155 m × 45 m × 140 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,736 triangles across 33 meshes, with 9 named parts. Download the 222 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Open pit terraces 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 222 KB: 2,736 triangles, 8,208 vertices and 33 materials, modelled in metres at 155 m × 45 m × 140 m.
Can I animate Open pit terraces?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 9 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Open pit terraces 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
