Crates

A low-poly stack of framed wooden shipping crates on a pallet, ready for a canal-side quay. A large gold crate and a small terracotta crate stand on the pallet, and an open crate of cloth bolts sits on top, with its lid set aside across the small crate.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Crates for the Canal City kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Canal City kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A trading city of bridges and palaces. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: terracotta #be5937, canal green #3a883a, stone white #f4f1ec, carnival gold #d0a225, terracotta dark #823d26, canal green dark #235223, terracotta light #d08971, canal green light #5db15d, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `waterLevel` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Water level" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size at the defaults: 1.20 m wide (x) × 0.90 m deep (z) × 1.04 m tall. The pallet is 1.2 × 0.9 × 0.144 m. The large crate is 0.62 × 0.58 × 0.70 m, the small crate 0.38 × 0.40 × 0.48 m, and the open crate 0.42 × 0.30 × 0.40 m (plank shells, before the proud battens). Cloth bolts are 11 cm across. The origin is at the bottom centre, resting on y = 0, and the front faces +Z. The GLB has 2,104 triangles in 18 meshes (merged per part and colour) and no animation clip. Normals are baked flat (non-indexed). Every material is named exactly after its kit palette colour; 10 of the 12 kit colours are used (warm white and mid grey are not). The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat: recolour by name. There is no text, stencil or merchant mark. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. Only the defaults were rendered and checked. waterLevel (the kit's 'Water level') is the acqua alta mark: everything below the tide line turns canal green dark, split exactly on the geometry rather than painted. The line is eased (0.4·w² m): 0 at 0, 0.10 m at the default (the pallet's feet and blocks, so its dark-wood blocks show as stained), and 0.40 m at 1 (well up the crate sides). The model carries no water itself. crates sets 1–3 crates: 1 keeps only the large crate on the pallet, 2 adds the small crate, and 3 adds the open crate, its cloth bolts and its lid. lidOff = 1 lays the lid across the small crate's post tops; 0 closes it on the open crate's side rails. crateSize scales every crate and the pallet (0.85–1.15). glb-lint: 0 errors and 5 heuristic warnings, all expected: material count and duplicate names (one material per mesh), non-indexed flat shading, sibling overlap (each crate's hidden core sits inside its planks and battens by design), and 'detached' pallet boards and lid. The lid rests on the small crate, which is a different part, and the pallet stringers sink 3 mm into the stained blocks; the lint only tests contact between meshes of the same part. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens in the slug-based ids this library requires; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. three-check accepts those ids, and all 7 survive the GLB reload. Fix rounds: (1) the tide stain was eased so the default no longer turns the whole pallet green, the battens were slimmed (6 to 4.5 cm), and the bolts were raised on a packing floor so they show above the rim; (2) the lid was slid forward, but it still hid the bolts; (3) the lid was set aside on the small crate instead.

About the Crates 3D model

Crates is a free low-poly 3D model from the Canal City set. It measures 1.2 m × 1.0 m × 90 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,104 triangles across 18 meshes, with 7 named parts. Download the 164 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Crates 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 164 KB: 2,104 triangles, 6,312 vertices and 18 materials, modelled in metres at 1.2 m × 1.0 m × 90 cm.
Can I animate Crates?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 7 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Crates 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
