Swinging lanterns

A low-poly caravanserai lantern rail: a braced dark-wood beam on two indigo-tiled mud-brick footings, with three hexagonal brass lanterns in indigo, white and red glass swinging out of step on their chains in a seamless 4-second loop.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Swinging lanterns for the Silk Road Caravanserai kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Silk Road Caravanserai kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A walled inn for desert traders. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: mud brick #9e3d2e, indigo #2d2d76, saffron #eead2b, carpet red #c32222, mud brick dark #63261d, indigo dark #18183f, mud brick light #c66253, indigo light #4848a8, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `goodsOnSale` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Goods on sale" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: about 2.81 m wide (X, beam with finials) × 0.58 m deep (Z, the footings) × 2.47 m tall to the post caps. The beam underside is at 2.3 m, and the lanterns are 0.65–0.74 m tall including the ring and tassel. Origin at the bottom centre, resting on y = 0, front facing +Z. The GLB has 2,436 triangles in 18 meshes and carries one 4 s seamless clip, 'scene-motion'. Each lantern node is pivoted exactly at its hook eye and swings ±11° front-to-back (about X), with a small quarter-phase roll about Z. That is two swings per loop, staggered between lanterns. The rail (footings, posts, beam, braces, hooks) never moves. The static node pose stored in the GLB is the t = 2 s pose, because the export runs after the determinism seek, so the lanterns sit slightly off-vertical when the clip is not playing. Every material is named exactly after a kit palette colour. 11 of the 12 colours are used; indigo dark is not. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so a colour name can appear on several materials; recolour by name. The glass colours carry a faint emissive term of their own colour, so the lanterns read as lit with no light inside the model. goodsOnSale (the kit's 'Goods on sale' knob) sets how many lanterns hang for sale: 1 + round(goodsOnSale × 3), so 3 at the default. The count is capped so lanterns stay at least 0.56 m apart and never touch mid-swing; the full 4 needs beamSpan ≥ 2.55 m. Part ids lantern_1…lantern_n follow the count. beamSpan, chainLength and swingAngle reshape the rig. The centre lantern hangs on a 1.5× chain and is 15% larger. All params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer; only the defaults were rendered and checked. glb-lint: 0 errors and 5 expected warnings: per-mesh duplicate materials, more materials than the direction's soft max of 10 for the same reason, deliberately non-indexed geometry for hard flat facets, nested sibling meshes (tiles on the footings), and a 2.47 m height against the direction's 1 m reference. Its verdict reads UNVERIFIED only because no requirements contract was supplied. plan-check rejects only the hyphenated library part ids, because its regex allows no hyphen; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. three-check and the GLB reload keep all 5 ids. Fix round: (1) the beam was lowered from 2.5 m to 2.3 m and the lanterns enlarged about 15% so they read at thumbnail size.

About the Swinging lanterns 3D model

Swinging lanterns is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Silk Road Caravanserai set. It measures 3.0 m × 2.5 m × 65 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,436 triangles across 18 meshes, with 5 named parts and a baked animation (4.0 s). Download the 202 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Swinging lanterns 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 202 KB: 2,436 triangles, 7,308 vertices and 18 materials, modelled in metres at 3.0 m × 2.5 m × 65 cm.
Is Swinging lanterns animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (4.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Swinging lanterns 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
