Excavator

A low-poly yellow crawler excavator for the Mine and Quarry kit, with slate tracks, a swivelling upper with cab and counterweight, and a boom, stick and toothed bucket heaped with ore. A baked 8-second loop swings it round to dump the load and back while the tracks stay still.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Excavator for the Mine and Quarry kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Mine and Quarry kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Rock, dust and heavy machines. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: ochre #bd8728, slate #525e6f, machine yellow #eecd2b, rust #9b4427, ochre dark #7e5a1b, slate dark #323943, ochre light #d6a95c, slate light #7b8593, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `oreColour` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Ore colour" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Rest-pose size: about 11.3 m long (z, counterweight tail to bucket) × 3.5 m wide (x, over the tracks) × 5.54 m tall (boom knee), a ~45 t class crawler excavator. The tracks are 5.0 m long and 1.0 m tall, and the swing ring top sits 1.2 m up. The boom faces +Z, the cab is on the operator's left (+X), the origin is the bottom centre of the rest-pose footprint, and the track shoes rest on y = 0. The GLB has 2,536 triangles in 30 meshes, one mesh per part and colour. Normals are baked flat (non-indexed). Every material is named exactly after its kit palette colour. The 8 s clip 'scene-motion' loops seamlessly from t = 0 (rest: bucket curled and heaped). The upper swings 40° about the swing-ring axis while the boom lifts 12° on its foot pin and the stick reaches out on the boom-tip pin. The bucket then tips on the stick-end pin to dump, and everything returns. Each of the four cylinders swivels on its foot pin while its rod slides to stay on its lug pin. The tracks, carbody and swing ring never move. The ore heap is a separate part: its scale sinks it into the bucket shell during the dump and heaps it back on the return, and bakeClip carries this as a scale track. The bucket stays at least 0.47 m off the ground through the loop. The GLB's static node transforms hold a mid-clip frame, not the rest pose (lint bounds reach 6.89 m), so play or seek the clip to t = 0 for the rest pose. oreColour (the kit's 'Ore colour') sets the ore heap's colour: slate light, ochre light, ochre (the default at 0.5), rust, then ochre dark. swingAngle and boomLift set the loop's amplitudes. trackLength rebuilds the crawler tracks. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and change the model only when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. Only the default build was rendered and checked; the param extremes were not, though the cylinder strokes were sized against the boomLift maximum. glb-lint: 0 errors and 6 heuristic warnings, all expected: one material per mesh, so material names repeat; non-indexed flat shading; intended nesting (rollers inside the track loops); 'detached' parts, because each part is one merged mesh; and a height above the 1 m reference. plan-check rejects only the hyphenated library part ids, because its id regex allows no hyphen. The same plan passes with the slug de-hyphenated. three-check and the GLB keep all 20 ids.

About the Excavator 3D model

Excavator is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Mine and Quarry set. It measures 6.2 m × 6.9 m × 12 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,536 triangles across 30 meshes, with 20 named parts and a baked animation (8.0 s). Download the 257 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Excavator 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 257 KB: 2,536 triangles, 7,608 vertices and 30 materials, modelled in metres at 6.2 m × 6.9 m × 12 m.
Is Excavator animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (8.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Excavator 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
