Trench walls

A modular 4 m section of deep-sea trench wall from the Deep Sea Abyss kit. Dark basalt strata step back in ledges dusted with pale marine snow, and glowing pods, magenta anemones and white tube worms with orange plumes cling to the face. Its ends tile seamlessly on a 1 m grid.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Trench walls for the Deep Sea Abyss kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It is a modular piece that snaps on a 1 m grid: give it a length in whole metres and put the origin at its snapping end, stated in meta.notes. This is one part of the Deep Sea Abyss kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Black water and living lights. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: abyss black #151619, glow cyan #20c6df, magenta #d02597, vent orange #ed7e1d, abyss black dark #090a0b, glow cyan dark #168a9c, abyss black light #3a3c40, glow cyan light #67d4e4, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `glowColour` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Glow colour" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Real scale: 4 m long × 4.16 m tall × 2.68 m deep (boulders included); the rock alone is about 2.3 m deep. Modular piece on a 1 m grid. The origin is at the -X snapping end, on the ground and centred in depth, and the wall runs from x = 0 to x = 4 (so the origin is at the end, not the bottom centre). The front faces +Z. Both end faces have the same cross-section, so you can place copies end to end at whole-metre steps without a seam. Glow pods, anemones and tube worms stay at least 0.35 m from each end. The model has 3314 triangles and 9 meshes. There are 9 materials, each named exactly after its Deep Sea Abyss palette colour. abyss black light appears twice (basalt strata and boulders) because the exporter writes one material per mesh. Normals are baked flat. No textures, no animation. The living lights (glow cyan, magenta, vent orange) also carry their palette colour as emissive. glowColour (default 0.5) sets the glow-pod colour: magenta below 1/3, glow cyan up to 2/3, vent orange above. At the ends of that range the pods share their material name with the anemones or the worm plumes. length, wallHeight and ledgeReach rebuild the wall in the viewer (2336 triangles at the smallest settings, 6796 at the largest), but the GLB holds the default values only. Viewer-only staging, not in the GLB: exposure 0.85 and tone mapping turned off on the glow materials so cyan stays saturated. Other engines will render the glow according to their own lighting. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its overall verdict prints UNVERIFIED only because no requirements contract exists. Four heuristic warnings were reviewed and accepted: the duplicate abyss black light material; bounding-box overlap between the wall-spanning glow pods, anemones and plumes; sediment flagged as detached (it beds 3 cm into the rock but is its own assembly); and the expected-1 m scale heuristic against a true 4 m wall. Assembly groups use plain ids (trench, trench.rock, trench.sediment, trench.life) because the kit's plan grammar has no hyphens. Every mesh carries a deep-sea-abyss-trench-walls.* id.
