Cables

A low-poly run of armoured subsea power cable lying in an S-curve on the sea floor, passing through a white repeater pod with glowing bands. Two teal data feeders branch off to wet-mate connectors, and concrete saddle clamps pin the cable down. Built for the Deep Sea Abyss kit.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Cables for the Deep Sea Abyss kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Deep Sea Abyss kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Black water and living lights. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: abyss black #151619, glow cyan #20c6df, magenta #d02597, vent orange #ed7e1d, abyss black dark #090a0b, glow cyan dark #168a9c, abyss black light #3a3c40, glow cyan light #67d4e4, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `glowColour` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Glow colour" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Real-world scale in metres. The default run is 3.99 m long, 1.73 m wide and 0.40 m tall. The repeater pod is 0.9 m long and 0.32 m across, and the trunk cable is 12 cm across with 6 cm feeders. Origin is the bottom centre of the footprint, resting on y = 0, with the front facing +Z. Each cable rests on one flat facet at y = 0 along its floor run. The model is static, with no animation clip. It has 2,464 triangles at the defaults. At the longest run with four clamps it is estimated at about 3,000, which was not measured. Every material is named after its kit palette colour. Facets are baked into the vertex normals, so the model stays flat-shaded in any engine. The glow bands and connector tips carry an emissive colour matched to the palette. glowColour picks that swatch in three steps: 0–0.32 magenta, 0.33–0.65 glow cyan (default), 0.66–1 glow cyan light. The exporter gives each mesh its own copy of a shared material, so mid grey appears three times and abyss black light twice; recolouring by material name still treats them as one. Each library part sits under a `cables.*` alias group that the design kit's checker uses; you can ignore or flatten it. glb-lint reported no errors. Its verdict is UNVERIFIED rather than a clean pass because no requirements contract was supplied. It gave three heuristic warnings: duplicate materials (explained above); 'detached parts' on the repeater, restrictors and cradles, because the alias groups make each mesh a lone sibling, though in the captures the pod sits in its cradles and the restrictors sleeve the cable; and a 0.4 m height that differs from the direction's 1 m reference, which is the real height of a cable lying on the floor. Only the GLB carries materials; the OBJ export is geometry only.
