Drifting floe

A low-poly slab of Arctic sea ice rocking gently on a patch of dark open water. It carries a snow drift, a pressure ridge of tumbled ice blocks and a blue melt pond, with brash-ice chunks bobbing around it in a seamless 6-second loop.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Drifting floe for the Arctic Tundra kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Arctic Tundra kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Ice, wind and long light. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: ice blue #2e67b8, white #f4f1ec, slate #525e6f, aurora green #3a883a, ice blue dark #1f457a, white dark #d7cebc, ice blue light #6190d1, white light #f9f8f6, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `snowDepth` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Snow depth" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

  • Drifting floe
  • Open water
  • Ripple ring (breathes on the surface)
  • Floe (heaves, pitches and yaws at its waterline centre)
  • Snow drift
  • Pressure ridge
  • Melt pond
  • Brash chunk 1 (bobs at its waterline)
  • Brash chunk 2 (bobs at its waterline)
  • Brash chunk 3 (bobs at its waterline)
  • Brash chunk 4 (bobs at its waterline)

Note: Size: the floe is 4.4 × 3.6 m with 0.6 m of freeboard, and the ridge tops out 1.63 m above the base. It rides a still 8.4 × 7.4 m water patch that is 0.3 m deep. The origin is the bottom centre of the water patch on y = 0, the waterline is at y = 0.3, and the melt-pond side faces +Z. Rig: the water is the still base. The floe is pivoted at its waterline centre and heaves ±3.5 cm, pitches, rolls and yaws by a few degrees. The snow, ridge and pond ride on it. Each brash chunk bobs on its own waterline pivot, and the ripple arcs breathe in scale. The 6 s clip ('scene-motion') is seamless. The static node pose in the GLB is the t = 2 s pose, because the checker exports after its determinism seek. The GLB has 1,020 triangles in 17 meshes (merged per part and colour) and 6 of the 12 kit colours. Normals are baked flat (non-indexed). Every material is named exactly after its palette colour. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat: recolour by name. Params are baked at their defaults and only change geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. snowDepth (the kit's 'Snow depth') thickens and spreads the snow drift and shrinks the melt pond. floeSize scales the floe and its water patch. ridgeHeight sets the pressure-ridge height. brashCount sets 0 to 6 chunks; the GLB carries 4. The pale ground disc in the preview is viewer staging only and is not in the GLB. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its warnings are expected: material count and duplicates come from per-mesh materials, unindexed geometry is deliberate flat shading, ridge and pond overlap is intentional embedding, and the brash, ripple and snow are flagged 'detached' because each is a separate part sitting on the water or the ice. plan-check passes on a copy with the slug de-hyphenated, because its part-id regex rejects the hyphenated ids this library requires. three-check accepts the ids, and all 11 survive the GLB reload. Fix rounds: (1) shrank and darkened the water patch, raised the freeboard and recoloured the waterline band; (2) replaced the outline-tracing ripple ring with rounder, broken arcs; (3) tightened the hero framing.

About the Drifting floe 3D model

Drifting floe is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Arctic Tundra set. It measures 8.0 m × 1.6 m × 7.0 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 1,020 triangles across 17 meshes, with 11 named parts and a baked animation (6.0 s). Download the 125 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Drifting floe 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 125 KB: 1,020 triangles, 3,060 vertices and 17 materials, modelled in metres at 8.0 m × 1.6 m × 7.0 m.
Is Drifting floe animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (6.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Drifting floe 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
