Cable drums

A low-poly 2.2 m wooden drum of black power cable on a steel spindle between two blue screw-jack drum stands, with its tail paid out across the ground to a red end cap. Two smaller red-cable spare drums stand chocked beside it, and a warning pennant is clamped to one jack.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Cable drums for the Wind and Solar Farm kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Wind and Solar Farm kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Clean power on open land. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: white #f4f1ec, panel blue #2e67b8, grass green #3a883a, signal red #e90c0c, white dark #d7cebc, panel blue dark #1f457a, white light #f9f8f6, panel blue light #6190d1, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `windSpeed` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Wind speed" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: the main drum is 2.2 m in diameter and 1.37 m wide across its flanges, and it sits on its spindle 1.25 m up, so the flanges clear the ground by 15 cm. The spare drums are 1.4 m. The whole set is about 5.1 m wide × 4.1 m deep × 2.37 m tall, including the cable tail. Units are metres, +Y up, and the front (cable tail) faces +Z. The origin is the footprint's bottom centre, and every foot, rim and the tail rest on y = 0. The GLB is static, carries no animation clip, and has 3,528 triangles in 21 meshes at the defaults (3,656 at the largest drum). Every material is named exactly after a kit palette colour (8 of the 12). The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat; recolour by name. windSpeed (the kit's 'Wind speed') sets the warning pennant's droop, from limp at 0 to flying level at 1, so it is a pose, not motion. drumDiameter scales the main drum and its jacks; cableFill sets how much cable is left on the drum; spareDrums (0–2) adds the chocked spares (the spares part stays as an empty node at 0). Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change geometry when the viewer rebuilds the scene. three-check passed at the defaults and at both extremes. glb-lint reported 0 errors at each; its warnings are expected: one material per mesh, non-indexed geometry for hard flat facets, intended nesting, the cable reported as 'detached' because it is the only mesh in its child part while seated in the flanges, and a 'scale' heuristic that expects 1 m objects. plan-check rejects only the hyphenated library part ids (its regex allows no hyphen); the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes.

About the Cable drums 3D model

Cable drums is a free low-poly 3D model from the Wind and Solar Farm set. It measures 5.1 m × 2.4 m × 3.9 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 3,528 triangles across 21 meshes, with 8 named parts. Download the 267 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Cable drums 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 267 KB: 3,528 triangles, 10,584 vertices and 21 materials, modelled in metres at 5.1 m × 2.4 m × 3.9 m.
Can I animate Cable drums?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 8 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Cable drums 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
