Spinning sign

A low-poly rotating roadside diner sign: a cherry red, bulb-ringed board in a chrome frame turning on a gearbox drum atop a single steel pole, with a mint starburst spinning above. It has a seamless 8 s loop: the board makes one full turn and the starburst counter-spins.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Spinning sign for the Roadside Diner kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Roadside Diner kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A lonely stop on a long road. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: chrome #cad1d8, cherry red #c32222, mint #90d5b3, desert tan #bf9769, chrome dark #9eabb7, cherry red dark #821717, chrome light #f7f7f8, cherry red light #db5757, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `era` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Era" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

  • Gearbox
  • Rotating board
  • Starburst topper

Note: Size: 8.16 m tall to the starburst tip, 3.16 m wide across the board frame, and 1.5 m square at the footing. The board is 2.8 m by 1.7 m and turns on a swivel 4.62 m up. At rest the board faces +Z. The origin is at the bottom centre and the footing rests on y = 0. The exported model has 1,208 triangles in 19 meshes, merged per part and colour, with normals baked flat (non-indexed). It uses 11 of the 12 kit colours (not dark wood). Every material is named exactly after its palette colour. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so a name can repeat: recolour by name. Motion: the baked clip scene-motion (8 s, seamless) moves two parts, both about the pole axis (x = z = 0). The head (turntable, spindle, yoke and board) pivots at the top of the gearbox and makes one whole turn. The starburst topper sits on an inner shaft through the board and makes two turns the other way. The footing, pole and gearbox never move. The board is double-faced: both faces carry the same abstract word blocks, bulbs and a mint arrow pointing +X. There is no real text, and the bulbs are modelled geometry, not emissive. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the model when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. era (the kit's 'Era') goes from a near-square 1940s board with short starburst stubs (0) to a deeply chamfered octagonal Googie board with long spikes (1). poleHeight sets the swivel height, boardWidth widens the board (the yoke shrinks to stay inside the chamfer), and spinTurns sets 1 to 3 board turns per loop. Only the default params were rendered and checked; the extremes were not captured. glb-lint: 0 errors and 5 heuristic warnings: material count, per-mesh duplicate materials, non-indexed geometry (deliberate flat shading), sibling overlap (trims and blocks embedded on purpose) and scale (compared with the direction's 1 m reference). The verdict reads UNVERIFIED only because no requirements contract was supplied. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens in the slug-based ids this library requires; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. three-check accepts the real ids, and all 6 survive the GLB reload. Fix round 1 widened the camera fit so the hero, side and back views show the whole sign, and widened the default board from 2.6 m to 2.8 m.

About the Spinning sign 3D model

Spinning sign is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Roadside Diner set. It measures 1.5 m × 8.2 m × 3.2 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 1,208 triangles across 19 meshes, with 6 named parts and a baked animation (8.0 s). Download the 118 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Spinning sign 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 118 KB: 1,208 triangles, 3,624 vertices and 19 materials, modelled in metres at 1.5 m × 8.2 m × 3.2 m.
Is Spinning sign animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (8.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Spinning sign 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
