Rising water

A low-poly narrow canal lock with a short blue narrowboat afloat between closed mitre gates. In a 10 s loop the chamber fills to the upper pound and empties to the lower one, lifting and lowering the boat as the ground paddles are drawn and dropped.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Rising water for the Canal and Locks kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Canal and Locks kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Slow boats through green country. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: canal green #3a883a, boat red and blue #2e67b8, brick #9e3d2e, willow #988e81, canal green dark #235223, boat red and blue dark #1f457a, canal green light #5db15d, boat red and blue light #6190d1, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `waterLevel` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Water level" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 10.0 m long (X) × 8.8 m wide (Z) × 4.65 m tall, measured with the ground-paddle racks drawn (4.33 m at rest, 4.22 m to the gate paddle gear). It is a narrow-boat lock: the chamber is 2.3 m wide, the copings sit 3.1 m above the bed, and the wall, coping and bank-top cross-section matches canal-and-locks-lock-gates. The chamber between the gates is shortened to about 7 m (real narrow locks are about 22 m) so the whole lock fits one readable piece. The narrowboat is 5.1 m by default, a short 'tug' length. Origin is at the bottom centre, resting on y = 0. Upstream is −X and the towpath bank faces +Z. Both cut ends show a soil face and the pound water's end face, as on the other chamber pieces. Animation: one baked 10 s seamless clip ('scene-motion'). The upper paddle racks rise, the chamber fills from 0.7 m to the upper pound, and the racks drop. After a hold, the lower racks rise, the chamber empties back to 0.7 m, and the racks drop. Frame 0 is near the top of the fill. The chamber water is one node with its origin on the bed, and only its Y scale is keyed. The ripples and the narrowboat (origin on the keel, 0.45 m draught) only translate in Y. Walls, banks, gates and both pounds never move. Gates stay shut, as on a real lock while the level changes. 2,396 triangles in the GLB. Every material is named after its kit palette colour (10 of the 12 are used; canal green light and boat red and blue dark are not). The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat; recolour by name. Params are baked at their defaults and only change the model when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. waterLevel (the kit's 'Water level') sets the upper pound level and so how far the chamber lifts the boat: 1.7 m at 0 to 2.9 m at 1 (2.3 m by default). The lower pound is fixed at 0.7 m. boatLength sets the narrowboat length, and rippleCount sets the ripples in the chamber. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its 6 heuristic warnings are expected: per-mesh duplicate materials (37 material slots carrying 10 names), unindexed geometry (flat shading on purpose), sibling overlap (wet-line and quoin skins on the walls, and the water nesting in the chamber), 'detached' meshes that sit on the embankment or float on the water, and a height compared with the direction's 1 m reference. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphenated slug ids this library requires. The same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. Both param extremes pass three-check and glb-lint: (waterLevel 0, boatLength 5.6, rippleCount 0) and (waterLevel 1, boatLength 3.6, rippleCount 12).

About the Rising water 3D model

Rising water is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Canal and Locks set. It measures 10 m × 4.7 m × 8.8 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,396 triangles across 37 meshes, with 16 named parts and a baked animation (10.0 s). Download the 232 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Rising water 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 232 KB: 2,396 triangles, 7,188 vertices and 37 materials, modelled in metres at 10 m × 4.7 m × 8.8 m.
Is Rising water animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (10.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Rising water 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
