Lock gates

A low-poly pair of mitred narrow-canal lock gates set in a 7 m snapping length of brick lock chamber. The timber leaves swing open and shut on their heel posts in a 10 s loop, and their black-and-white balance beams sweep over the grass banks.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Lock gates for the Canal and Locks kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It is a modular piece that snaps on a 1 m grid: give it a length in whole metres and put the origin at its snapping end, stated in meta.notes. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Canal and Locks kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Slow boats through green country. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: canal green #3a883a, boat red and blue #2e67b8, brick #9e3d2e, willow #988e81, canal green dark #235223, boat red and blue dark #1f457a, canal green light #5db15d, boat red and blue light #6190d1, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `waterLevel` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Water level" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 7.0 m long × 10.8 m wide × 4.32 m tall (to the gate paddle gear). It is a narrow-boat lock: the chamber is 2.3 m wide and the copings sit 3.1 m above the bed. Modular piece on a 1 m grid: it runs along +X from x = 0 to x = 7. The origin is at the snapping end x = 0, on the chamber centre line (z = 0), resting on y = 0. Upstream is −X, the towpath bank faces +Z, and the heel posts stand at x = 3.2. The chamber, walls, copings and bank-top width match canal-and-locks-lock-chambers, but the outer grass slope here is steeper (1.4 m run, not 2.4 m), so the outer toe of the banks will not line up with that piece. The ends show a cut soil face that is hidden once pieces are butted. Animation: one baked 10 s seamless clip ('scene-motion'). Each leaf is its own node pivoted exactly on its heel-post axis, and only its Y rotation is keyed. The rest pose (rotation 0) is closed: the leaves meet in an 18° mitre pointing upstream. They swing 72° until they lie flat against the chamber walls, hold, close, and hold shut. The front leaf runs 0.3 s behind the back leaf. Frame 0 is mid-swing. Walls, banks, water, paddles and bollards never move. 1,188 triangles in the GLB. Every material is named after its kit palette colour (10 of the 12 are used; canal green light and boat red and blue dark are not). The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat; recolour by name. Params are baked at their defaults and only change the model when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. waterLevel (the kit's 'Water level') sets one level across the whole piece, from 0.7 m (0) to 2.7 m (1), and the algae line follows it. The level is the same on both sides because gates only swing once the levels are equal. gateSwing limits how far the loop opens. beamLength sets the balance-beam reach. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its 6 heuristic warnings are expected: per-mesh duplicate materials, unindexed geometry (flat shading on purpose), sibling overlap (algae and quoin skins on the walls), 'detached' bank-top meshes that sit on the embankment prism, and a height compared with the direction's 1 m reference. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphenated slug ids this library requires. The same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. Both param extremes pass three-check and glb-lint: (waterLevel 0, gateSwing 0.3, beamLength 3.2) and (waterLevel 1, gateSwing 1, beamLength 2.4).

About the Lock gates 3D model

Lock gates is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Canal and Locks set. It measures 7.0 m × 4.3 m × 11 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 1,188 triangles across 25 meshes, with 10 named parts and a baked animation (10.0 s). Download the 123 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Lock gates 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 123 KB: 1,188 triangles, 3,564 vertices and 25 materials, modelled in metres at 7.0 m × 4.3 m × 11 m.
Is Lock gates animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (10.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Lock gates 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
