Narrowboats
A low-poly 18 m English canal narrowboat afloat on a patch of still canal water. It has a black steel hull with a raised bow, a long blue cabin with framed windows and a red oxide roof, a green cratch cover over the bow well, a chimney and roof clutter, and a swan-neck tiller that swings the rudder in a seamless 8 s loop.

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:
Narrowboats for the Canal and Locks kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Canal and Locks kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Slow boats through green country. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: canal green #3a883a, boat red and blue #2e67b8, brick #9e3d2e, willow #988e81, canal green dark #235223, boat red and blue dark #1f457a, canal green light #5db15d, boat red and blue light #6190d1, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `waterLevel` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Water level" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

- Narrowboat
- Canal water (still base)
- Steel hull and decks (heaves, pitches and rolls at its waterline centre)
- Cabin, windows and doors
- Chimney, vents, plank, pole and plant tubs
- Cratch board and cover over the bow well
- Cruiser-stern rail
- Rudder and swan-neck tiller (turn on the rudder stock)
Note: Size: 18.0 m long × 2.08 m beam boat (the narrow-lock limit) on a 21.0 m × 4.5 m water patch, 3.0 m tall from the patch floor to the chimney cap. The cabin roof is 1.68 m above the waterline. The bow faces +Z. Origin at the bottom centre of the water patch, resting on y = 0. The water patch is the still base. The hull is modelled to 0.4 m below the waterline (the real ~0.55 m draught is hidden by the opaque water). 3,044 triangles in the GLB (three-check's 3,334 includes the viewer's ground). One baked 8 s seamless clip: the hull heaves, pitches and rolls a few centimetres about its waterline centre, and the tiller turns the rudder about its vertical stock. Every material is named after its kit palette colour (11 of the 12 are used; plain canal green is not). The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat: recolour by name. No name or registration is painted on the boat. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. waterLevel (the kit's 'Water level') raises the canal surface from 0.45 m to 0.75 m and the boat floats with it. boatLength stretches the midbody and cabin, and the window count follows it. tillerSwing scales the rudder motion (0 holds it straight). glb-lint: 0 errors. Its 6 heuristic warnings are expected: material count and duplicate materials (per-mesh copies), unindexed geometry (flat shading on purpose), sibling overlap (cabin, cratch and fenders set against the hull), floating-part boxes (the water surface, roof pole and stern rail sit on their supports), and height compared with the direction's 1 m reference. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphenated slug ids this library requires. The same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. Param extremes (14 m with low water; 21 m with high water and the tiller held) both pass three-check and glb-lint. Fix rounds: (1) thinner, darker-sided water slab, dark blue roof hatch, lower viewer exposure, top view uncropped; (2) hero reframed; (3) rudder blade and stock made shallower, because at the lowest water level they poked below the patch floor.
About the Narrowboats 3D model
Narrowboats is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Canal and Locks set. It measures 4.5 m × 3.0 m × 21 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 3,044 triangles across 31 meshes, with 8 named parts and a baked animation (8.0 s). Download the 334 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.
- Is the Narrowboats 3D model free for commercial use?
- Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
- What file format is it, and how big is it?
- A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 334 KB: 3,044 triangles, 9,132 vertices and 31 materials, modelled in metres at 4.5 m × 3.0 m × 21 m.
- Is Narrowboats animated?
- Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (8.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
- Which engines and tools can open it?
- Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
- How was the Narrowboats 3D model made?
- Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
