Sample tanks

A low-poly lab bench of three faceted specimen tanks, holding kelp, a yellow coral and a pale anemone, on a deep-blue cabinet. A grey pipe manifold joins the lids and runs down to a pump with a yellow valve wheel. Made for an underwater research base.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Sample tanks for the Underwater Research Dome kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Underwater Research Dome kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A science base on the sea floor. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: deep blue #1b447e, aqua #47d1d1, yellow #eecd2b, white #f4f1ec, deep blue dark #0d223f, aqua dark #29a3a3, deep blue light #2e67b8, aqua light #88dddd, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `depthAndLight` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Depth and light" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Real-world size at default: 2.05 m wide (x), 1.61 m tall (y) and 0.68 m deep (z). The cabinet is 0.43 m tall to the worktop, and each tank holds an 0.85 m water-and-glass column, 0.38 m across. The origin is at the bottom centre, the toe kick rests on y = 0 and the front faces +Z. Part ids use the slug without hyphens, 'underwaterresearchdomesampletanks', because the kit's plan validator does not allow hyphens in ids; the rest of the Underwater Research Dome set does the same. Each material's name is its kit palette colour; the runtime export gives every mesh its own copy, so there are 31 material slots carrying 12 colour names. Water ('aqua', opacity 0.38) and glass ('aqua light', opacity 0.26) are alpha-blended and double-sided. In some engines you may need to set their render order or sorting. depthAndLight sets the water depth (50–95% of tank height) and the glow of every 'yellow' surface (lamps, sample tags, coral, valve wheel). Both are baked into the GLB at the chosen value. Specimens follow the order kelp, coral, anemone and repeat for a fourth tank. Triangles: 2,124 at default in the GLB, well under the 6,000 budget even at 4 tanks. This is a static asset with no animation clips. glb-lint found 0 errors. Its warnings are heuristics: duplicate per-mesh material copies, non-indexed flat-shaded geometry, nested bounding boxes in the cabinet and pump, and parts flagged as 'not touching' because they sit embedded in the cabinet and tank stack rather than reaching the ground themselves.
