Turning wind spire

A low-poly 9 m kinetic wind spire for a solarpunk city. Three stacked tiers of leaf-shaped sails turn on a slim white mast that rises from a planted terracotta planter, with a terracotta leaf weather vane and a sky-blue glass finial on top. The sail tiers turn and the vane swings in a seamless 8-second loop.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Turning wind spire for the Solarpunk Garden City kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Solarpunk Garden City kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A green city of glass and vines. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: leaf green #3a883a, white #f4f1ec, terracotta #be5937, sky blue #2e67b8, leaf green dark #235223, white dark #d7cebc, leaf green light #5db15d, white light #f9f8f6, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `plantCoverage` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Plant coverage" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

  • Planting and vines
  • Mast and generator
  • Low sail tier
  • Middle sail tier
  • High sail tier
  • Weather vane and finial

Note: Size: 9.0 m tall to the tip of the glass finial. The footing is 2.5 m across and the low sail tier sweeps a circle about 2.8 m across. The origin is the bottom centre of the footing, which rests on y = 0, and the planter's service door faces +Z. The GLB has 2,560 triangles in 30 meshes (merged per part and colour). Its normals are flat-faceted (non-indexed). Animation clip 'scene-motion' is 8 s and loops seamlessly. In each loop the low tier turns once, the middle tier turns once the other way, the high tier turns twice, and the vane swings ±25° on its swivel. Each moving part is a node whose origin is its hub or swivel on the mast axis, so the pivots are exact. The base, mast and planting never move. Note that at t = 2 s and 6 s the four-sail tiers look the same as at rest because of their symmetry. Every material is named exactly after a kit palette colour. 11 of the 12 colours are used ('white' is not). The exporter writes one material per mesh, so a colour name can appear on several materials: recolour by name. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. plantCoverage (the kit's 'Plant coverage') fills the planter beds and flowers, lengthens the vines over the rim and sets how high the climbers reach up the mast, always staying below the generator. spireHeight (7–11 m) rescales the tier spacing and sail size. sailCount sets 3–6 sails per tier. sailPitch sets the angle of each sail from the radial line, 0–60°. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its 5 heuristic warnings cover the per-mesh material count (two warnings), the non-indexed flat-normal geometry, deliberately nested hubs, bearings and soil, and the height being greater than the direction's 1 m reference. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens in the slug-based ids this library requires. three-check accepts those ids, and all 8 survive the GLB reload.

About the Turning wind spire 3D model

Turning wind spire is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Solarpunk Garden City set. It measures 3.1 m × 9.0 m × 3.1 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,560 triangles across 30 meshes, with 8 named parts and a baked animation (8.0 s). Download the 233 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Turning wind spire 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 233 KB: 2,560 triangles, 7,680 vertices and 30 materials, modelled in metres at 3.1 m × 9.0 m × 3.1 m.
Is Turning wind spire animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (8.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Turning wind spire 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
