Chess Set

A Staunton chess set in boxwood and ebony on an inlaid maple-and-walnut board with a rosewood border, frozen mid-game in an Italian Game. All 32 pieces are turned forms on felted, weighted bases, with carved knights, crowned kings and queens, slit-mitre bishops and battlemented rooks.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

A Staunton chess set on a wooden board with inlaid squares and a border: all 32 pieces as turned lathe forms with weighted bases — knights with carved manes and ears, crowns on kings and queens, bishops with mitre slits, rook battlements — in boxwood and ebony, arranged mid-game.

Note: Size at the defaults: a 0.486 m square board, 22 mm thick, with 50 mm squares and a 40 mm border. The tallest piece (the king, 99 mm with its cross) brings the overall height to 0.12 m. The origin is at the bottom centre of the board, and White's side faces +Z, with a1 at the front-left. The position is the Italian Game after 20 plies (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 Nf6 5.d3 d6 6.O-O O-O 7.Re1 a6 8.Bb3 Ba7 9.h3 h6 10.Nbd2 Re8). Nothing has been captured, so all 32 pieces are on the board. Each piece has a small seeded offset and turn, as if placed by hand. The GLB has 146,572 triangles in 28 meshes, merged per part and material, with no animation clip; the count is the same at every param value. Pieces are grouped into 12 parts by side and type (e.g. chess-set.white_knights), each holding a wood mesh and a felt mesh. They are not one node per piece. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so material names repeat (boxwood ×6, ebony ×6, felt ×12): recolour by name. Turned pieces have split normals at profile creases, so bevels stay crisp. The knight heads are an extruded profile with rebuilt, pillowed side caps, carved mane locks, ears, eyes, brows and nostrils. Bishop slits are a real groove displaced into the mitre. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. squareSize scales the board and pieces together, pieceScale scales the pieces against the squares, borderWidth sets the rosewood border, and movesPlayed (0–20) replays the game from the opening position. The extreme squareSize 0.04 / pieceScale 1.05 / borderWidth 0.02 / movesPlayed 0 passed three-check with no piece collisions, and a squareSize 0.06 / pieceScale 0.85 build ran cleanly. Exposure is 0.72 (an override of the direction's 1.0), so the boxwood keeps its colour. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its verdict reads 'UNVERIFIED' only because no requirements contract is supplied. Its 4 warnings are expected: the material count (one material per mesh), the triangle count above the direction's 80k default (the brief asks for 100k–150k), duplicate material parameters (the same repeated names), and sibling overlap (the border, stringing and squares nest in one board). plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphen in the slug-based ids this library requires; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. In the 1280×800 hero capture, the tip of the board's nearest corner just touches the bottom edge of the frame.

About the Chess Set 3D model

Chess Set is a free PBR 3D model from the Hero Props set. It measures 49 cm × 12 cm × 49 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 146,572 triangles across 28 meshes, with 15 named parts. Download the 3.4 MB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Chess Set 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 3.4 MB: 146,572 triangles, 111,460 vertices and 28 materials, modelled in metres at 49 cm × 12 cm × 49 cm.
Can I animate Chess Set?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 15 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Chess Set 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
