Astronomical Clock Tower

A 22-metre Gothic clock tower with layered gilt astronomical dials, carved automata and a glazed brass gear bay. Dressed stonework, slate shingles, tracery and clockwork are fully modelled, with a baked 24-second loop.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

A late-medieval astronomical clock tower about 9 m wide and 22 m tall: a Gothic stone tower of dressed blocks with buttresses, tracery windows, crockets, finials and a steep slate spire with dormers; on its face a large astronomical dial (zodiac ring, sun and moon pointers, a half-silvered moon sphere, Roman and Arabic hour rings in gilt and deep blue), a calendar dial below with twelve carved month medallions, two little windows above where a procession of twelve carved apostle figures passes, and carved side figures (a skeleton ringing a bell, a figure with a mirror) in canopied niches. Behind a glazed side bay, a visible brass gear train: dozens of spur and crown wheels with modelled teeth, arbors and an escapement. Detail is modelled, not textured: stone blocks, mouldings, tracery, teeth, rivets, carved folds. Seamless 24 s baked loop: dial rings and pointers rotate at different rates, the moon sphere turns, the gear train turns with meshing ratios, the bell figure swings its arm and the apostles move past the windows. Hard requirement: the exported GLB must contain between 1,000,000 and 1,100,000 triangles — measure it before delivering and adjust detail (gear teeth, tracery, figure resolution, stone blocks) to land in that band; outside it the delivery is rejected. Keep the GLB under 45 MB: index all geometry, instance or merge repeated parts by material, no image textures.

Note: Stylised demonstration automata; the 24-second cycle is not calibrated astronomical timekeeping. The GLB stores the default parameter configuration; knobs rebuild the source viewer. Re-bake motion after remixes before exporting. OBJ export contains geometry only. Lint has nonblocking warnings for generic product budgets and bounds overlap in layered assemblies.
