Drills

A skid-mounted Mars colony core-drilling rig: a braced red lattice mast with a crown sheave and an orange rotary drill head feeding a drill string into a collared borehole, plus a solar-topped power pack, hydraulic hose and a side rack of spare drill rods with orange bits.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Drills for the Mars Colony kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Mars Colony kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A first settlement on red dust. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: rust red #c32222, white #f4f1ec, solar blue #2e67b8, hazard orange #ed7e1d, rust red dark #821717, white dark #d7cebc, rust red light #db5757, white light #f9f8f6, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `dustStormLevel` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Dust storm level" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Real-world scale: 3.35 m tall overall (3.2 m mast plus crown sheave), about 1.9 m wide by 2.9 m long for the rig itself, on a 1.54 m by 2.5 m skid; the borehole sits just in front of the skid on the +Z side. 2,040 exported triangles, static, with no animation clips and no textures. Part ids use the 'marscolonydrills.*' prefix because the kit's part-id grammar does not allow hyphens. Materials are named with the exact kit palette colours (9 used; 'warm white', 'white light' and 'dark wood' are not used). The exporter clones a material per mesh node, so the GLB has 38 material slots that share those 9 names, and a recolour should match on material name. glb-lint found 0 blocking errors. Its overall verdict prints UNVERIFIED only because no requirements contract was supplied, and its 5 warnings are heuristics (material count, duplicate materials, overlap of nested parts, 3.35x reference scale). The params rebuild the model and do not animate it: dustStormLevel grows the spoil heap and the dust drifts against the skid (0 leaves the spoil heap only), mastHeight rebuilds the lattice, headHeight slides the drill head and resizes the drill string and hose, and rodCount sets 2 to 6 rods in the rack. The origin is the bottom centre of the rig's footprint, not counting dust, so the dust knob never moves the model.
