Tumbleweeds

A low-poly dry tumbleweed resting on the sand. It is an open, see-through ball of zig-zag twigs, with pale sun-bleached twigs outside, a warmer tangle inside, and darker ribs that fan out from a snapped stem.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Tumbleweeds for the Desert Canyon kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Desert Canyon kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Red rock, heat and hidden water. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: sandstone orange #ed7e1d, sage #89a178, sky blue #2e67b8, bone #e4ddcd, sandstone orange dark #af590e, sage dark #637854, sandstone orange light #eea668, sage light #b1bca9, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `rockColour` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Rock colour" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 0.81 m wide x 0.79 m deep x 0.69 m tall at the defaults, which is a typical mid-sized Russian-thistle tumbleweed. The origin is at the bottom centre, resting on y = 0. The base of the ball is flattened by about 1 cm so the twigs sit on the ground. A ball has no real front; the snapped stem points to +X, slightly toward +Z. The GLB has 4,998 triangles in 5 meshes and no animation clip, and each material is named exactly after a kit palette colour. Every twig is a modelled 3-sided tube with no alpha cards, so the ball is truly see-through, and twigs crossing inside the tangle is intended. The params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. Only the defaults were rendered and checked. At the maximum twigCount of 140 the model is about 5,760 triangles. rockColour (the kit's 'Rock colour'): this part has no rock, so the knob sets how much red canyon dust the stems carry. It moves all four straw tones together along the ramp warm white → bone → sandstone orange light → sandstone orange → sandstone orange dark → dark wood, in three steps. Below 0.25 the twigs are cleaner and paler, 0.25–0.75 gives the default shown, and above 0.75 they are dusty orange with dark-wood ribs. glb-lint: 0 errors and 2 heuristic warnings. The geometry is non-indexed on purpose, to keep hard flat-shaded normals, and the parts' bounding boxes overlap because they nest in one ball. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens in the slug-based ids this library requires; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. three-check accepts those ids, and all 6 survive the GLB reload.

About the Tumbleweeds 3D model

Tumbleweeds is a free low-poly 3D model from the Desert Canyon set. It measures 81 cm × 69 cm × 79 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 4,998 triangles across 5 meshes, with 6 named parts. Download the 357 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Tumbleweeds 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 357 KB: 4,998 triangles, 14,994 vertices and 5 materials, modelled in metres at 81 cm × 69 cm × 79 cm.
Can I animate Tumbleweeds?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 6 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Tumbleweeds 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
