Steam and diesel engines
A low-poly pair of railway engines coupled buffer to buffer: an iron-green 0-6-0 side-tank steam engine with working rods and crossheads, and a maroon 0-6-0 diesel shunter with a long bonnet and end cab. A seamless 4 s loop turns the wheels and works the motion while the bodies stay still.

Left rail: colours and the 3 knobs the agent wrote into this model — they rebuild the geometry and go into your download. Right rail: looks for the viewer. Drag to orbit, scroll to zoom.

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:
Steam and diesel engines for the Railway Station kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Railway Station kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Platforms, signals and a grand hall. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: brick #9e3d2e, iron green #3a883a, cream #f1e7d0, signal red #e90c0c, brick dark #63261d, iron green dark #235223, brick light #c66253, iron green light #5db15d, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `era` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Era" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 17.7 m long over buffers (steam engine 8.76 m, diesel 8.9 m), about 2.7 m wide across the cab grab rails and 3.89 m tall to the chimney top, on standard-gauge wheel spacing (wheel centres 1.44 m apart). Steam driving wheels are 1.4 m, diesel wheels 1.2 m. Origin at the bottom centre; every wheel rests on y = 0 and the steam engine's smokebox faces +Z. The GLB has 8,368 triangles in 67 meshes. Every material is named exactly after its Railway Station palette colour; the exporter writes one material per mesh, so the same name repeats — recolour by name. The baked clip scene-motion (4 s, seamless) moves only parts on their own pivots: every wheelset turns 2 whole turns on its axle, the coupling rods orbit with the crank pins (right side leading the left by 90°), the steam connecting rods swing about their crosshead pins while the crossheads slide in their bars, and the diesel radiator fan spins on its shaft. Both bodies stay still, as if on rollers. The steam engine's piston rod meets the crosshead exactly; there is no valve gear. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the model when rebuilt in the viewer. era (the kit's 'Era') shortens the chimney and drops the copper-coloured (brick light) chimney cap and dome top above 0.5, removes the cream lining above 0.75, paints the diesel iron green dark below 0.35 and brick above, adds cream warning panels to the diesel ends above 0.7 and shortens its exhaust. At era 0 the chimney reaches 4.26 m. driverDiameter raises the steam footplate and boiler with the wheels; dieselLength stretches the diesel bonnet. Both extremes (era 0 / 1.6 m / 10 m and era 1 / 1.2 m / 8 m) passed three-check and glb-lint with 0 errors, at most 8,392 triangles. glb-lint: 0 errors; heuristic warnings cover the per-mesh materials, deliberate non-indexed flat shading, nested trim, the 'detached' rods and chimney (they rest on other parts), and the 3.9 m height vs the direction's 1 m reference. plan-check passes on a copy with the slug de-hyphenated; its part-id regex rejects the hyphens the library ids require, while three-check accepts them and all 24 ids survive the GLB reload.
About the Steam and diesel engines 3D model
Steam and diesel engines is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Railway Station set. It measures 2.8 m × 3.9 m × 18 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 8,368 triangles across 67 meshes, with 24 named parts and a baked animation (4.0 s). Download the 715 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.
- Is the Steam and diesel engines 3D model free for commercial use?
- Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
- What file format is it, and how big is it?
- A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 715 KB: 8,368 triangles, 25,104 vertices and 67 materials, modelled in metres at 2.8 m × 3.9 m × 18 m.
- Is Steam and diesel engines animated?
- Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (4.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
- Which engines and tools can open it?
- Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
- How was the Steam and diesel engines 3D model made?
- Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
