Guard rails

A low-poly 4 m run of galvanised W-beam highway guard rail, bolted through dark spacer blockouts to steel I-section posts, with amber reflectors on the top lip. It is a modular piece that snaps end to end on a 1 m grid.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Guard rails for the Highway and Roadworks kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It is a modular piece that snaps on a 1 m grid: give it a length in whole metres and put the origin at its snapping end, stated in meta.notes. This is one part of the Highway and Roadworks kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): Lanes, junctions and cones. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: asphalt #3b3e45, line white #f4f1ec, cone orange #ed7e1d, sign green #3a883a, asphalt dark #17191c, line white dark #d7cebc, asphalt light #636569, line white light #f9f8f6, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `countryRoadRules` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Country road rules" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 4.0 m long (X), 0.41 m deep (Z) and 0.82 m tall to the reflector tops, with the rail top at 0.75 m. The run lies along +X with its traffic face toward +Z. The origin is at the snapping end: x = 0 is the rail's cut face, the depth is centred on z = 0 and the run rests on y = 0, so it snaps on the kit's 1 m grid. lengthMeters is always a whole number of metres. Posts sit at half-spacing from each end, so neighbouring pieces keep an even post rhythm. Odd lengths force 1 m spacing. The W-beam crowns are 0.10 m deep (the real part is 0.083 m) so the profile reads at thumbnail size. Mid-run piece: it has no end terminals. The GLB is baked at the default params: 228 triangles, 5 meshes, 5 materials, static, no animation clip. Every material is named after its kit palette colour, so you can recolour by name. Country road rules (the kit's knob) is a switch at 0.6. Up to 0.6 you get motorway spec (steel I-posts, steel blockouts). Above 0.6 you get square timber posts and timber blocks, so dark wood does not appear in the default GLB. lengthMeters, postSpacing and railHeight rebuild the model in the viewer only. Both extremes were rendered and passed three-check: timber, 8 m, 1 m spacing, 0.9 m rail; and steel, 3 m, 0.6 m rail. glb-lint: 0 errors and 2 heuristic warnings, both expected: non-indexed flat-shaded geometry, and the rail and blockouts flagged as 'detached' because they are fastened to parts in another group. plan-check rejects only the hyphenated library part ids. A de-hyphenated copy of the plan passes, and three-check and the GLB carry all 5 ids.

About the Guard rails 3D model

Guard rails is a free low-poly 3D model from the Highway and Roadworks set. It measures 4.0 m × 82 cm × 41 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 228 triangles across 5 meshes, with 5 named parts. Download the 21 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Guard rails 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 21 KB: 228 triangles, 684 vertices and 5 materials, modelled in metres at 4.0 m × 82 cm × 41 cm.
Can I animate Guard rails?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 5 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Guard rails 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
