Departure board

A low-poly freestanding split-flap departure board for a subway platform. Two steel legs carry a steel housing with a line-colour header, route bullets and rows of black flap modules that flip on their axles in a cascading 8-second loop.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Departure board for the Subway Station kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. It moves: author a seamless baked loop (2–12 s) with every pivot exactly at its hinge, axle or swivel, and keep the base still. This is one part of the Subway Station kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A busy underground stop. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: tile white #f4f1ec, safety yellow #ffdd33, steel #7e8c9a, line colour #988e81, tile white dark #d7cebc, safety yellow dark #e6bf00, tile white light #f9f8f6, safety yellow light #ffea80, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `lineColour` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Line colour" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: 2.2 m wide × 3.37 m tall × 0.54 m deep (base plates), with the board housing 0.34 m deep and its underside 2.0 m above the floor. That is a freestanding platform board that clears head height. The origin is at the bottom centre on y = 0, and the board faces +Z. The housing is open front and back, and every flap carries characters on both faces, so the back is finished too. The GLB has 2,900 triangles across 69 meshes. Normals are baked flat (non-indexed). Animation: one 8 s seamless clip, 'scene-motion'. Each of the 27 flap modules turns a half turn twice about its own row axle (a full turn per loop), cascading left to right and row by row. Each flap pivot sits exactly on its axle, and the base, legs and housing never move. The flap pivots are registered as subway-station-departure-board.flaps.r<row>c<module> (e.g. .flaps.r1c1). The baker drops repeated keys, so during a flap's pauses the GLB interpolates a creep of at most about 1° toward the next flip. There is no real text or logo: characters are abstract bars. Seven kit colours are used (tile white, tile white dark, safety yellow dark, safety yellow light and dark wood are not). Every material is named exactly after its palette colour. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so names repeat: recolour by name. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. lineColour (the kit's 'Line colour') sets the header line band height (0.04–0.14 m) and the route bullet radius (0.07–0.105 m). rows and columns resize the flap field, and the housing and legs follow. mountHeight raises the board. glb-lint: 0 errors and 6 heuristic warnings. They cover the material count and duplicates (per-mesh materials), non-indexed geometry (deliberate flat shading), deliberate embeds, 'detached' axles (they seat in the stiles, which belong to another part group) and height compared with the direction's 1 m reference. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens in the slug-based ids this library requires. three-check accepts those ids, and all 8 survive the GLB reload.

About the Departure board 3D model

Departure board is a free animated low-poly 3D model from the Subway Station set. It measures 2.3 m × 3.4 m × 54 cm (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,900 triangles across 69 meshes, with 8 named parts and a baked animation (8.0 s). Download the 325 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Departure board 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 325 KB: 2,900 triangles, 8,700 vertices and 69 materials, modelled in metres at 2.3 m × 3.4 m × 54 cm.
Is Departure board animated?
Yes — the GLB carries a baked animation (8.0 s), ready to play with any glTF animation mixer.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Departure board 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
