Steam vents

A low-poly fumarole field: a dark basalt crust mound about 5 m across with three sinter-crusted chimney vents, glowing throats and a hot fissure, under billowing white steam columns, with boulders and moss tufts on the fringe.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Steam vents for the Volcano Island kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Volcano Island kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A smoking peak over black sand. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: basalt black #151619, lava orange #ed7e1d, ash grey #757e8a, jungle green #3a883a, basalt black dark #090a0b, lava orange dark #af590e, basalt black light #3a3c40, lava orange light #eea668, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `eruptionStage` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Eruption stage" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

  • Steam columns
  • Hot fissure

Note: Size: the crust mound is about 5.0 × 4.1 m and 0.35 m high, the main chimney is 1.1 m tall and the steam reaches 2.86 m, which is the full bounding-box height. The bottom rests on y = 0, the origin is at the bottom centre of the mound and the front (where the fissure runs) faces +Z. eruptionStage (the kit's 'Eruption stage') drives the activity. At 0 the throats and fissure are cold basalt and only short wisps rise. Above 0.15 the throats and fissure glow orange; from 0.6 their cores turn lava orange light. The sinter apron spreads and the steam columns grow taller, and from 0.7 the column roots turn grey. ventCount (1–5) adds smaller vents, chimneyHeight (0.5–1.8 m) scales every chimney and fieldWidth (3.5–7 m) sets the mound. The params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change the geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. The defaults were rendered and checked, plus one extreme combination (eruptionStage 1, 5 vents, 1.8 m chimney, 3.5 m mound: 5.9k triangles, three-check PASS). At that extreme the hero framing crops the base a little. The GLB has 2,863 triangles in 16 meshes and is static, with no animation clip. Every material is named exactly after a kit palette colour; 10 of the 12 kit colours are used (dark wood and lava orange light are not used at the default stage). The lava materials carry a mild emissive of their own colour. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so some names repeat: recolour by name. Viewer-only staging: exposure is 0.6 rather than 1.05, and the staging ground is not in the GLB. glb-lint reports 0 errors and 6 warnings, all expected. The material-count and duplicate warnings come from the per-part, per-colour meshes. The geometry is non-indexed on purpose, for flat facets. The overlap warnings come from parts sharing the mound's footprint. The steam is flagged as 'detached', but its root puffs sit inside the chimney lips. The height warning only compares against a 1 m reference. The verdict line reads UNVERIFIED only because no requirements contract was supplied. plan-check rejects only the hyphenated library part ids, because its regex allows no hyphen; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. three-check keeps all part ids.

About the Steam vents 3D model

Steam vents is a free low-poly 3D model from the Volcano Island set. It measures 5.0 m × 2.9 m × 4.1 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 2,863 triangles across 16 meshes, with 8 named parts. Download the 217 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Steam vents 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 217 KB: 2,863 triangles, 8,589 vertices and 16 materials, modelled in metres at 5.0 m × 2.9 m × 4.1 m.
Can I animate Steam vents?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 8 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Steam vents 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
