Lava rocks

A low-poly cluster of black basalt lava rocks: a jagged boulder split open by a glowing orange crack that spills into a small lava pool, with a leaning second rock, smaller rocks with hot undersides, ash-grey scree and a tuft of moss.

How it was made

The brief given to 1DesignTool's “3D object” template:

Lava rocks for the Volcano Island kit. Design it as one clear asset at believable real-world scale for that setting (state the size in metres in meta.notes), with its main parts modelled and named, readable at thumbnail size and from every orbit angle. This is one part of the Volcano Island kit (Low-poly style, flat-lowpoly direction): A smoking peak over black sand. Use ONLY the kit palette, by name: basalt black #151619, lava orange #ed7e1d, ash grey #757e8a, jungle green #3a883a, basalt black dark #090a0b, lava orange dark #af590e, basalt black light #3a3c40, lava orange light #eea668, soot black #1b1b22, warm white #f2ede2, mid grey #7d828c, dark wood #3d2a1c. Every material's `name` must be exactly the palette colour it uses — the GLB carries these names so the kit recolours as one; an unnamed material fails delivery. Kit knob: expose a param `eruptionStage` (0–1, default 0.5) for the kit's "Eruption stage" setting wherever it makes sense on this part, and keep that id.

Note: Size: the split boulder is about 1.26 m tall, and the whole cluster covers 2.23 × 2.38 m. Front faces +Z, the origin is at the bottom centre of the footprint, and every rock is bedded flat on y = 0. The GLB has 1,180 triangles in 20 meshes (one per part and colour) and no animation clip. Normals are baked flat (non-indexed), so the facets survive in any engine. Every material is named exactly after its kit palette colour. The exporter writes one material per mesh, so the same name appears on several materials: recolour by name. At the default, 7 of the 12 kit colours are used. The lava materials carry a mild emissive of their own colour. eruptionStage (the kit's 'Eruption stage') widens the crack, grows the pool and heats the colours. At 0 the crack is a narrow cold split, its faces are basalt black light with a soot-black foot, and the pool is cooled crust with no glowing rock feet. From 0.15 the crack, pool and some rock feet glow. From 0.6 the crack turns lava orange light and the pool turns lava orange, and the emissive strength rises with the stage. size (0.6–1.6 m) scales the whole cluster, rockCount (2–8) sets how many small rocks ring the foot, and spread (0.8–1.4) sets how far they and the scree scatter. The small rocks always leave the arc where the pool runs out clear. Params are baked into the GLB at their defaults and only change geometry when the scene is rebuilt in the viewer. glb-lint: 0 errors. Its warnings are heuristic: duplicate per-mesh materials, deliberate non-indexed flat shading, the boulder halves and molten core deliberately overlapping, and the exporter's per-mesh material count. plan-check passes except for its part-id regex, which rejects the hyphens in the slug-based ids this library requires; the same plan with the slug de-hyphenated passes. three-check accepts those ids, and all 8 survive the GLB reload. Fix rounds: (1) a molten core fin fills the crack so it no longer shows sky, the small rocks skip the pool arc, and the glow and ash tones were toned down; (2) the crack was widened and turned 17° off the hero line so a glowing face shows, and the pool top went one step darker so it no longer bleaches in the sun.

About the Lava rocks 3D model

Lava rocks is a free low-poly 3D model from the Volcano Island set. It measures 2.2 m × 1.3 m × 2.4 m (W × H × D) at real-world scale and is built from 1,180 triangles across 20 meshes, with 8 named parts. Download the 103 KB GLB and drop it into three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot or Blender — free for commercial use, no attribution required.

Is the Lava rocks 3D model free for commercial use?
Yes. It is free under the 1DesignTool 3D library license: use it in personal and commercial work — games, apps, websites, renders, ads and client projects — and modify it as you like, with no credit required. What you can't do is re-sell or re-distribute the file on its own or inside a model pack.
What file format is it, and how big is it?
A single binary glTF 2.0 file (.glb), 103 KB: 1,180 triangles, 3,540 vertices and 20 materials, modelled in metres at 2.2 m × 1.3 m × 2.4 m.
Can I animate Lava rocks?
It ships as a static mesh. Its 8 named parts are separate nodes, so you can move or animate each one in your engine.
Which engines and tools can open it?
Anything that reads glTF 2.0. three.js, React Three Fiber, Babylon.js, Godot 4 and Blender import the GLB directly; Unity and Unreal Engine load it through their glTF importers. The snippets above show the exact code for three.js, React Three Fiber, Godot and Blender.
How was the Lava rocks 3D model made?
Claude Code (Claude Opus 5.5) generated it inside 1DesignTool's 3D template from a written brief, then the design kit's checks verified the geometry and the GLB before it was published. You can make your own the same way with 1DesignTool.
